Hydraulic winches complicated, no.

Compare two serious systems below and you can see that the opposite is true. Fit a simple pressure gauge to the system and you know exactly what is going on.

Hydraulic systems powerful, oh yes.

The H12 is a proper 12,000lb winch, so powerful we have to govern it down to 4.7 tonnes or it will damage the vehicle. A battery powered winch pulls only a small percentage of it's rating (around 35%) or it cooks itself in minutes, which is the difference between "pulling capacity" and "rating" .

Hydraulic systems reliable, absolutely.

In practice around 20 times more reliable than the best battery powered winch. Caterpillar, JCB and even the Pyramid builders used hydraulic power, not by accident, but by design. H12 systems last for decades, not minutes.
